Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Olympics, scheduled to begin July 24 in Tokyo, have been postponed to a date "no later than summer 2021."
The decision was announced by the International Olympic Committee Tuesday amid growing pressure from athletes and various stakeholders
“In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community,” the IOC said in a statement
This is the first time they have delayed an Olympic Games. Thanks to war some were cancelled (1916,1940, 1944).
Despite the world trying to control COVID-19, the epidemic that has shut down many facets of public life across the globe, it had become apparent to experts that this summer's staging of the Games will be "completely reckless." Many major sports leagues in the United States and Europe have been suspended indefinitely for over a week.
